RE: Jackson Rancheria, CA Thanksgiving Nov 26th-29th, 2008

Thanks again to John and Marcelle for the great rally. Next time Gray's won't be a rerun... It was lots of fun and I heard a rumor that plenty of propane firepits were purchased this weekend... (thanks Tom!!) We're still here after spending the day quading in the wonderful weather. We took Butch and Karla along to make sure Karla would be interested in having a quad... She did great and we think we might have convinced her.. maybe... we'll see... And Jada only tried to bite Ava once... And then dinner at Gianni's in Pine Grove with plenty of wine...Okay, maybe way too much wine for some of us. I think might have called Karla - Linda?? or maybe Butch by some other name... Hope everyone made it home safely...

Hey fellow turkeys... Any idea on a dinner time? DD and her BF will be driving up for a few hours (and dinner).. as they both work that night (midnight madness sale)... Like to give her a target.. and she's concerned about getting her 12 hours of sleep before having to work overnight...:R

Queen of the fence jumping

Yes, we've got the queen of this event. Since we've been retired, we've been spending 24-7 time with our American Eskimo mix.. In fact, she's become very bonded to DH even though frankly he wasn't responsible for her addition to the family. We never had an issue with her before, but now when we both walk down the street to the neighbors, she watches out the window. Within a few moments, she's out the dog door and literally leaps over our 6foot fence gallops a few doors down and leaps over the neighbors 6 foot fence and then stands at our neighbors back door asking to be let in. Now, when we leave in our car, she's content to wait patiently until we get home and she's never jumped the fence then. But if she knows we're in the neighborhood, she will hunt us down.. So, she gets locked in the bedroom. Since she's a SPCA dog, I'm thinking it's safe to assume she escaped from her prior home. I'm hoping she'll get a little less athletic when she gets older - although she already is almost 5...

RE: Jackson Rancheria, CA Thanksgiving Nov 26th-29th, 2008

We're good for group plans for any of the meals... There's a grocery store nearby I'm sure... And there's always the buffet... On Friday, we're thinking about going out on the quads if the weather isn't too wet. We'll see... We left them in Volcano in case it was nice.

Interested in visiting Mexico for the day, but didn't enjoy the 2.5 hour wait at Algondes...to get back. We don't need any medical procedures or drugs... Suggestions?

RE: Cisco Grove road closures... draft EIS

Sorry for the lack of details regarding this area. We love camping at Cisco Grove and enjoying the area with our utility quads. This particular road - Rattlesnake Road - is the only access to a network of offroad trails to several lakes and dispersed camping areas. At the base of the road there is an RV park with hookups (Cisco Grove Campground) which allows ATVs and off road vehicles access to the road directly from the campground. For those of us with RVs, this is a important staging area. The road itself is dirt and rather rough and not very suited to anything but 4x4s, although cars do manage to travel some of it. It is also one of only two access points to the Fordyce Creek Trail which is a popular difficult rock crawler/jeep trail. It is the type of riding which we enjoy which is "pack a lunch" scenic destinations - some of which are only accessible by a quad or motorcycle. It is popular with families as the riding is mostly easy trail. The trail to Signal Peak offers a fantastic view of the Sierras. It would be unfortunate if this access road were closed to quads and non-street legal offroad vehicles. There are very few staging areas along the road - and most are utilized by campers. There just isn't any place to park a quad trailer of any real size. At the campground, there is plenty of safe parking as well as a staging area for those just in the area for a day. Thank you for adding your support for keeping this area open.

Cisco Grove road closures... draft EIS

NOW is the time to comment on the draft EIS for the Tahoe National Forest and off road access. One of the recommendations is to close rattlesnake road (from the campground) to Fordyce area to anything not street legal... AND there's other changes in the plan to other offroad areas. If you ride or drive anything offroad in that area, please check the preferred alternative 6 map... Here's the website to make comments on the Draft EIS The preferred alternative is 6 - which makes Rattlesnake road (the access road from the campground) into a street legal road only... Kind of eliminates the attractiveness of Cisco for quading... And its one of the only areas left to ride quads from the RV

RE: Kia automobiles

I have one of the first Kia Sorento models. It's just 6 years old now. Have spent probably less than $500 in repairs over the 6 years not related to the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty... My only complaint is that the gas mileage is not very good as its full time 4x4..which was a mistake. We actually use it as a tow vehicle if we take our quads camping...

RE: Camping in Quartzsite

Hard to define the "best" site. We were there last year and stayed in La Posa South - mostly because we wanted to be closer to the dump, water and trash containers. It was our first time doing the "boondocking" thing for a long period of time. We actually liked that area as it wasn't too sandy as it was mostly rocks. And it was close to an ATV area (we've got quads) Some people like to camp closer to town so they can walk to the fairs but that area looked crowded to us. Of course, there are also fans of the Plomosa road area which is free for 14 days. We're not real sure where we're going to be this year. But it won't be in a RV park.

We'll be there in January - can't go until after the holidays... Last year was in La Posa South... Not sure where this year... Wherever we can get in the most quad riding...

RE: Helping out DD's BF? Good or bad idea? LONG

Thank you all for the input. It's been interesting. I had a "heart to heart" with him tonight and I'm going ahead with helping him get his car legal and "on the road again" - whatever it takes. And when he gets back on his feet, he can reinburse me.. I learned more about his family and there isn't anyone to provide any guidance or support at all. However, I did make it clear that he needs to take a step forward to change his life - statis quo isn't going to cut it - especially at his age. Frankly, with his security guard background, clean record and hopefully a desire to move on with his life, he should consider applying for the CHP as they are really recruiting due to a large number of retirees. He said it was an option he was considering. If he really wants to still go to college to be a physical therapist, he can still do so but at least he'd have a better paying job...

Helping out DD's BF? Good or bad idea? LONG

I'm all new to this. Our one and only DD waited to have her first very serious BF at 19. He's 25. He's had a rough time of it with his adored father dying 5 years ago, mom's a drug addict and stepmom isn't in the picture. He's got a full time job, but it's not too much above minimum wage so he's barely making it. He never took the opportunity to go to college because he immediately was alone. Now his car is dead and he doesn't enough money to fix it or get it smogged so he can continue to work. In addition to his other job, he works two hours a week for our little coffee vending service for extra money. AND I've fronted him next months pay to help pay for the car repairs, but it's still not quite enough. While I do like this kid and he treats my daughter like a princess, he needs to get his act together and go back to school. He knows that and he'd like to be a physical therapist (like his father was...) but that's 8 full time years of college and well, he hasn't started yet. While I feel for him, I just wish DD had decided to hook up with someone with a plan of action (perferably a college degree) She's in college and is planning to be a paramedic. SO, it looks like I'm going to get his car fixed to be driveable and he's going to owe me several months of work... It's not the money, although we are early retirees and money's not exactly flowing in the same way.. But I just don't see a different solution right now. I remember my dad helping me out and I guess I was lucky I had that support. Even though I have misgivings about it all, I just can't stand back from helping. I just hope I'm not being stupid.

RE: Jackson Rancheria, CA Thanksgiving Nov 26th-29th, 2008

We went up to Jackson (an hour from us) to spend an evening with Jim and Cheri who were visiting the Rancheria... The countryside is really beautiful right now. The casino was crowded! And of course, we didn't win anything...Maybe our luck will change in a few weeks... If we do a potluck style on Friday, we'll run to Jackson for some homemade pumpkin pasta - it's REALLY good.
